Neuropsychological assessment is used to show the ways in which a person can or cannot perform certain functions or tasks that are dependent upon brain activity. These (for example, attention, memory and learning) are often necessary for successful living. Impairment in many of these functions can lead to functional difficulties in daily life-management skills (including driving), occupational skills, academic skills, decision making abilities, and much more.
The standardized tests used in a neuropsychological evaluation typically assess functioning in the following areas: attention and memory, problem-solving and other complex abilities, visual-spatial functions, language functions, sensory perceptual functions, and motor functions. Assessment of academic skill development, personality structure, and emotional - social functioning, while not exclusive to neuropsychological evaluation, is typically performed, as well. The perspective of the neuropsychologist is frequently requested to understand subtle brain-related factors involved in academic failure or impaired emotional functioning, even when no biological causes are suspected. Howsoever, the specific areas assessed depend upon the referral questions presented.
In the majority of clinical cases, the process starts with an interview with the individual and/or family members / caregivers. The decision of which tests to use is based on the interview and a review of the medical or academic records obtained. The subsequent testing process usually involves meeting with the individual being evaluated a total of 2-4 times, with each session ranging from being 2-4 hours long. Once testing is completed, a concluding report with diagnoses and recommendations is generated. These conclusions are carefully derived based on integrating information from test results, observational data, professional records, and sometimes even observations in other settings, such as school or hospital.
Forensic neuropsychology involves the neuropsychological assessment of brain functioning and behavior in legal settings or with legal applications. Forensic neuropsychological and psychological evaluations involve the assessment of brain functioning and behavior, as well as psychosocial and emotional factors, in legal settings or with legal applications. Neuropsychological and psychological evaluations are often useful in a variety of legal or forensic settings, including civil, probate, family, disability, and criminal ones.
Children, teens, and young adults may struggle at school for various reasons. Some may have difficulties adjusting to the structure, others may have difficulties managing social pressures, and yet others may have difficulties learning the information. Regardless of the cause, these students will have difficulties academically and this type of evaluation will assist in determining the nature of their struggles and how to help them learn best. It will also indicate if the student would benefit from tutoring, changes to homework assignments, an IEP or 504 plan, as well as other school-based accommodations.
For certain surgeries, especially those that are elective or invlilve a life-style change, a psychological assessment is often conducted to help insure that the patient is informed and prepared. These assessments usually include a through interview, record review, mental status exam, and some personality tests.
We believe that early assessment and treatment is key to having a well-balanced and fulfilling life. Some people may hesitate in obtaining an evaluation due to being concerned about being labeled (or their child being labeled). However, it is important to understand that a diagnosis is simply a simplified way to describe a cluster of symptoms or behaviors that tend to occur together. It does not define you, it is not all of who you are, and it definitely will not change you. But it can help explain why someone may be struggling in certain areas and it can provide insight into what would be the most effective way to improve that person's life.
Some are also concerned about negative judgment by others. In our reports we attempt to make the client “come to life” by integrating their cognitive and emotional processes together. We also tend to the strengths that the person has in the report in attempt to clarify that a diagnosis is not necessarily a deficit. Furthermore, as part of the “debriefing” process we will discuss with you which portion of the report will be shared with others and, when possible, we limit the information shared to what is absolutely needed in order to get you the services needed. But if you have any other concerns about the evaluation purpose or process please do not hesitate to contact us.
